From films to artworks, environments to videos, an expanded conception of cinema is represented by this artist, who sees motion pictures as the deployment of our soul, an interface filtering the various processes that animate us, both visible and invisible. Presenting an immersive project for every room, in which animals and humans, ghosts and forests, the living and the dead cohabitate in slumbering interstitial worlds, the artist echoes the perceptual and cosmomorphic approaches of the IAC and the Laboratoire espace cerveau: the obscurity of these artworks is charged with subversive power, as though the experience of darkness might transform us and reactivate our conversation with the living. At the heart of this alternative half-light, the idea is to deploy a relational ecology that represents a true science of compassion.

After The Unmanned, a series of 8 films which retrace the History of computation in reverse, the artists have been working on a second cycle called The Everted Capital since 2018. This new project, conceived as a performative speculation on the future of value, attempts to produce, through each episode and via the protocols that they unfold, a fiction which exists as an alternative to that of capital.

Otium #4 groups together solo exhibitions by three artists from the same generation, coming from three continents: Leone Contini, Maria Laet and Kate Newby.
With simple and measured gestures, these artists share their desire to initiate other ways of being, in porosity with the environment, to which they accord their attention and their care. They propose a re-centering, an intake of breath, more often than not in connection with the earth, somewhere between germination, collection and reparation. In this slowed down temporality, Leone Contini, Maria Laet and Kate Newby, work to initiate or re-establish links between humans and things, often the most ordinary, that are no longer looked at or that can no longer be seen. Their practice is synonymous with organicity and the infra-thin.

On the occasion of its fortieth anniversary, beyond festivities or an overview, this autumn the IAC is presenting a snapshot of its activities – exhibitions, collection, emerging creation, talks – within the very dynamic of experimentation and research. In a time of accelerated transformations, the IAC is reaffirming its original dimension as a laboratory now more than ever, supporting artists and researchers of all kinds.

Radio / Tomorrow’s Sculpture
Radio is the third part in the Tomorrow’s Sculpture cycle dedicated to the artist by three exhibition venues in Europe (the Mudam Luxembourg, the Kunst Museum Winterthur, and the IAC). In what will be the artist’s first project designed for several institutions, Tomorrow’s Sculpture variously unfolds based on a shared pre-selection of artworks and constitutes a prism through which Katinka Bock explores the cornerstones of her sculptural practice – the notions of flux, matter, and space – in multiple variations.

The Middle Earth

This new and original collaboration comes from the artists’ desire to explore together the territory where they live, in a poetic and critical fashion.
After a period in Marseille, followed by Rome and then Naples where they regularly travel, Alves and Durham settled on the coast of the “inland sea” following a continuous and committed period of roaming that led them away from the American continent and all the way to Europe. In a similar vein to Jimmie Durham’s Eurasian Project, begun in 1994 just after his departure from America, and the project Seeds of Change that Maria Thereza Alves began in the port of Marseille in 1999, the idea of The Middle Earth began to form little by little, in search of that vast continent, not at all defined by borders, but rather something that is completely imagined and dreamed, and thus, endless.

Created by the Musée d’art contemporain de Lyon in 2002, Rendez-vous, an international platform for young creative artists with funding from the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, uniquely in France, involves the combined energies of four separate institutions: the Biennale de Lyon, the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Lyon, the Institut d’art contemporain, Villeurbanne/Rhône-Alpes and the Musée d’art contemporain de Lyon.
Artistic direction of the event is shared by all four.

In the light of both recent-day scientific achievements -in neurosciences, astrophysics, anthropology- and the reassessment of practices such as hypnosis, telepathy, shamanism and animism, the Laboratoire espace cerveau offers itself, from the perspective of artistic experimenting, as a gathering point for researchers and artists willing to share intuition as their driving force, collective vision as their common ground, and exchange as their working method.
Transdisciplinary by nature, the Lab evolves on a gradual scale, in various stages. In the context of the 5th edition of De leur temps, the triennial exhibition of the ADIAF, the Institut d’art contemporain presents a new instance of collections of French contemporary art through a selection of artworks that have been acquired since 2012. Reflecting the vitality of French collectors when it comes to contemporary art, this event has the vocation of sharing the passion of these collectors, while showing the extent of their involvement with the art “of their time”.

Made possible by the complementarity of these institutions, Rendez-vous proposes to reinforce the connections between different domains of competence, in this way opening increased perspectives to the chosen artists.
Since 2009, ten curators from ten international biennials have been invited to contribute to Rendez-vous. Each edition is the opportunity to invite new biennials.

The research subjects introduced here, fundamentally linked to the preoccupations and concerns of the IAC, will be further developed in the context of the Station 10 of the Laboratory space brain in December of 2015.
They build upon the recent attempts to be freed from the terms and conditions of the aesthetic experience in its usual acceptance, so as to privilege the attention, perception and sensations of the visitor (following exhibition The Collection Under Review, Artwork Experiences, 2014).
The Institute, having placed research at the heart of its activities since its creation, presents itself as a place of Otium: an intermediary lapse of time, a time for thought, for mediation, propitious to intuition and awareness.
The gardens, like the interior spaces, will be opened, welcoming these projects developed in an elsewhere, becoming, for a Summer, a here.
