In a space remodelled for each occasion, the Institute schedules four exhibition periods per year. These consist of several novel projects.
The solo exhibition is the closest to the artist and his work and is a basic principle of events at the Institute (2006: Anthony McCall, Allen Ruppersberg; 2007: Frangois CurIet, Jef Geys; 2009: Laurent Montaron; 2010 : Michel François, Matt Mullican; 2011: Hans Schabus, Joachim Koester 2009 : Laurent Montaron ; 2010 : Michel François, Matt Mullican ; 2011 : Hans Schabus, Joachim Koester). 2009 : Laurent Montaron ; 2010 : Michel François, Matt Mullican ; 2011 : Hans Schabus, Joachim Koester; 2012: Berdaguer & Péjus, Bojan Šarčević; 2013: Saâdane Afif, Manfred Pernice; 2014: Thomas Bayrle, Guillaume Leblon; 2016: Jason Dodge; 2017: Ann Veronica Janssens; Maria Loboda ; 2018: Katinka Bock ; 2019: Daniel Steegmann Mangrané; 2021: Apichatpong Weerasethakul...).
Group and theme exhibitions focus on the issues of creative art today; these are more experimental and occasional (2008: Fabricateurs d’espaces; 2011: Yes, We Don't, 2013: 1966-79; 2015: RIDEAUX / blinds;  Otium #1 - De Mineralis, Pierres de vision & Kata Tjuta; Otium #2 - Tomorrow in the Battle Think on Me & Collection 15; 2016: Le Temps de l'audace et de l'engagement; 2018: OTIUM#3 - Jean-Marie Perdrix, Linda Sanchez, Dane Mitchell; 2019: OTIUM #4 - Leone Contini, Maria Laet, Kate Newby; 2022: La Fabrique du Nous #1 / Quels Territoires ?...).

The Drift

Tarek Atoui

from  to

IAC Villeurbanne

The IAC has invited the artist Tarek Atoui to present his first major solo exhibition in Europe. This project includes existing works and new productions, and is structured around three axes: the exhibition, the educational spaces and the planned performances. Far from a simple alternation, the artist has imagined this exhibition as a living organism in which sound and human porosities become entangled and intertwined.

Les ateliers d'été

du Laboratoire espace cerveau

from  to

Camille Llobet

Fond d'air

from  to
From March 11 to May 28 2023, the IAC invites the artist Camille Llobet to invest all of its spaces with the Fond d’air exhibition. Drawing together existing artworks and recent productions by Camille Llobet, the Fond d’air exhibition presents a deep dive into the heart of humanity.

This new edition of Young International Artists (Jeune création internationale) is focusing on new work in Europe, by inviting five European curators to show artists who complement those who have graduated from art schools in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The latter group is selected by a panel of judges comprising the institutions co-staging the event (Lyon Contemporary Art Biennale; National Fine Arts School in Lyon; Institute of Contemporary Art, Villeurbanne/Rhône-Alpes; and macLYON) and two artists from previous editions, Anne Le Troter and Nicolas Momein.

from  to
Lara Almarcegui, Cyril Bron, Pauline Julier, Irene Kopelman, Maxime Lamarche, Cynthia Montier & Ophélie Naessens, Lygia Pape, Laura Sellies, Emilija Škarnulytė, Fabien Steichen

Apichatpong Weerasethakul

Periphery of the Night

Exposition personnelle Apichatpong Weerasethakul

from  to
The IAC presents Periphery of the Night, an ambitious monograph on Thai artist and filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul.

From films to artworks, environments to videos, an expanded conception of cinema is represented by this artist, who sees motion pictures as the deployment of our soul, an interface filtering the various processes that animate us, both visible and invisible. Presenting an immersive project for every room, in which animals and humans, ghosts and forests, the living and the dead cohabitate in slumbering interstitial worlds, the artist echoes the perceptual and cosmomorphic approaches of the IAC and the Laboratoire espace cerveau: the obscurity of these artworks is charged with subversive power, as though the experience of darkness might transform us and reactivate our conversation with the living. At the heart of this alternative half-light, the idea is to deploy a relational ecology that represents a true science of compassion.

INFANTIA (1894-7231)

from  to
Fabien Giraud and Raphaël Siboni create a multifaceted work in which films, performances and sculptures present alternative hypothesis of our past and future as so many possibilities for transforming us in the present.

After The Unmanned, a series of 8 films which retrace the History of computation in reverse, the artists have been working on a second cycle called The Everted Capital since 2018. This new project, conceived as a performative speculation on the future of value, attempts to produce, through each episode and via the protocols that they unfold, a fiction which exists as an alternative to that of capital.

Laboratoire espace cerveau - Station 16

“TOWARDS A COSMOMORPHIC WORLD” PROGRAMME

from  to
Co-founded in 2009 by artist Ann Veronica Janssens and Nathalie Ergino, director of the Institute for Contemporary Art (IAC), the space brain Laboratory investigates theoretical and practical research that allow for the interconnection of space, time, body and brain. In the light of both recent-day scientific achievements −in neurosciences, astrophysics, anthropology, biology, geology, etc)− and the reassessment of practices such as hypnosis, shamanism and animism, the space brain Laboratory offers itself, from the perspective of artistic experimenting, as a gathering point for researchers and artists willing to share intuition as their driving force, collective vision as their common ground, and exchange as their working method. Transdisciplinary by nature, the Lab evolves on a gradual scale, in various stages. These stages make up so many investigative units, and may assume various forms, such as workshops, lectures, or a particular focus on a body of works, whether in-site (in situ) or off-site (ex situ).

from  to
Giulia Cenci, Charlotte Denamur, Cédric Esturillo, Sebastian Jefford, Zsófia Keresztes, Randolpho Lamonier, Théo Massoulier, Naomi Maury, Jean-Baptiste Perret, Zhan Zhang Xu
This first edition of Young International Creation ensures both the continuation and renewal of the “Rendez-vous” event which was established in 2002, coming before this new event and being replaced by it.
This new set up continues to embody the aspect of young creation of the Lyon Biennial allowing visitors to discover a range of artistic propositions coming from an emerging local and international scene. It is anchored even more radically in the dynamics of the Biennale by inviting the curators of the Palais de Tokyo to participate to the artistic selection.

OTIUM #4

Leone Contini - Maria Laet - Kate Newby

from  to
Leone Contini, Maria Laet, Kate Newby
The IAC, placing research at the heart of its activities, occasionally presents itself as a place of Otium, an interval which favors thinking, meditation and awareness. The gardens, like the interior spaces, are thus opened up in order to initiate a different space-time.

Otium #4 groups together solo exhibitions by three artists from the same generation, coming from three continents: Leone Contini, Maria Laet and Kate Newby.

With simple and measured gestures, these artists share their desire to initiate other ways of being, in porosity with the environment, to which they accord their attention and their care. They propose a re-centering, an intake of breath, more often than not in connection with the earth, somewhere between germination, collection and reparation. In this slowed down temporality, Leone Contini, Maria Laet and Kate Newby, work to initiate or re-establish links between humans and things, often the most ordinary, that are no longer looked at or that can no longer be seen. Their practice is synonymous with organicity and the infra-thin.

Daniel Steegmann Mangrané

Ne voulais prendre ni forme, ni chair, ni matière

from  to
For Daniel Steegmann Mangrané’s project, the IAC has extended the limits of its capacity to adapt itself to the artist’s project by disrupting the conditions of the exhibition, communication and mediation, all the way to the very day to day operation of the Institute.
And so, the opening hours of the exhibition will change each day. As the length of the day grows longer, exhibition opening times will also increase symbolically, keeping pace with a natural rhythm. This original and unique experience will emphasize an alchemy which exists between the project and the artist and the place which hosts them both.

Un automne sous le signe des 40 ans de l’IAC

Cosmomorph ?

from  to
From the creation of the Nouveau Musée in 1978, to its merging with FRAC Rhône-Alpes in 1998, to the birth of the Institut d’art contemporain, the IAC has distinguished itself as one of the pioneering structures for contemporary art in France.

On the occasion of its fortieth anniversary, beyond festivities or an overview, this autumn the IAC is presenting a snapshot of its activities – exhibitions, collection, emerging creation, talks – within the very dynamic of experimentation and research. In a time of accelerated transformations, the IAC is reaffirming its original dimension as a laboratory now more than ever, supporting artists and researchers of all kinds.

Every two years, the IAC experiments with its collection in situ.
Alongside the experiment undertaken in Villeurbanne with various cultural organisations, in 2018 the IAC is presenting a selection of works that include both recent acquisitions and works from the existing collection.

Katinka Bock

Radio / Tomorrow’s Sculpture

from  to
Following her participation in various collective exhibitions at the IAC (1966-79, 2013; Demain dans la bataille pense à moi, 2015-16; Le Trait de Jupiter, 2017), the IAC invites Katinka Bock this autumn for a major solo exhibition.

Radio is the third part in the Tomorrow’s Sculpture cycle dedicated to the artist by three exhibition venues in Europe (the Mudam Luxembourg, the Kunst Museum Winterthur, and the IAC). In what will be the artist’s first project designed for several institutions, Tomorrow’s Sculpture variously unfolds based on a shared pre-selection of artworks and constitutes a prism through which Katinka Bock explores the cornerstones of her sculptural practice – the notions of flux, matter, and space – in multiple variations.

OTIUM #3

Jean-Marie Perdrix - Linda Sanchez - Dane Mitchell

from  to
Jean-Marie Perdrix, Linda Sanchez, Dane Mitchell
The IAC, having placed research at the heart of its activities since its creation, becomes, from time to time, a space for the Otium, an intermediary lapse of time conducive to thinking, meditation and awareness. The gardens, like the spaces inside the IAC will then be open, hosting projects that have been developed in an elsewhere, that will become, for the length of a summer, a here.

Otium#3 collects the work of three artists, Jean-Marie Perdrix, Linda Sanchez, Dane Mitchell, who each have in common this idea of seizing matter as the foundation of their work. Mineral, organic and cosmic matter, volatile and in movement, is explored by each one of these artists, experimenting with its possibilities in different ways.

Approached in a cosmomorphic manner, this matter is as much an issue of human activities as of nature, since such a distinction no longer has any meaning. Seeking consistency, these artists use experiments and experiences as a way of producing their artistic forms. It is in this way that they intend to create and establish links with the environment, as if to intensify their relationship with what is.

Maria Thereza Alves, Jimmie Durham

The Middle Earth

Mediterranean Project by Maria Thereza Alves & Jimmie Durham

from  to
In Spring of 2018, the IAC hands the totality of its space over to artists Maria Thereza Alves and Jimmie Durham for their project devoted to the Mediterranean, called The Middle Earth

This new and original collaboration comes from the artists’ desire to explore together the territory where they live, in a poetic and critical fashion.
After a period in Marseille, followed by Rome and then Naples where they regularly travel, Alves and Durham settled on the coast of the “inland sea” following a continuous and committed period of roaming that led them away from the American continent and all the way to Europe. In a similar vein to Jimmie Durham’s Eurasian Project, begun in 1994 just after his departure from America, and the project Seeds of Change that Maria Thereza Alves began in the port of Marseille in 1999, the idea of The Middle Earth began to form little by little, in search of that vast continent, not at all defined by borders, but rather something that is completely imagined and dreamed, and thus, endless.

Rendez—Vous I Biennale de Lyon 2017

Rendez-vous is resolutely devoted to showcasing young French and international creation. Rendez-vous is central to the 14th Biennale de Lyon and is a veritable “antechamber of expectation”. In the past it has exhibited–amongst others, and well before they took their place on the international scene–Thai artist Apichatpong Weerasethakul (winner of the Palme d’or at Cannes in 2010), British artist Ryan Gander, Swedish artist Nathalie Djurberg (Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2009), and French artists Guillaume Leblon and Julien Prévieux (Marcel Duchamp Award, 2014), guests of the Biennale de Lyon in 2011 and 2015 respectively.

Created by the Musée d’art contemporain de Lyon in 2002, Rendez-vous, an international platform for young creative artists with funding from the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, uniquely in France, involves the combined energies of four separate institutions: the Biennale de Lyon, the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Lyon, the Institut d’art contemporain, Villeurbanne/Rhône-Alpes and the Musée d’art contemporain de Lyon.
Artistic direction of the event is shared by all four.

Charwei Tsai

Water Moon

from  to
Borne by the notion of impermanence, Charwei Tsai’s oeuvre makes itself part of the continual flux that irrigates each
presence in the world. Through a diversified practice, including calligraphy as well as documentary or performance pieces, the Taiwan-born artist creates zones of passage
revealing the silent movements animating and traversing the universe.
Using sharing as its modality, it examines the bonds of coexistence uniting phenomena opening our eyes to unsuspected convergences.

Jef Geys

Le Tour de France 1969 d'Eddy Merckx / Les Plantes médicinales

from  to
Since his beginnings in the 1950s, Jef Geys has flouted the established limits between minor and major art, culture and trivia, intimate and collective, through a continually evolving œuvre. Ten years after his major solo exhibition at the IAC, Jef Geys returns to the Institut with two separate projects based on questioning our society’s hegemonic systems: Le Tour de France 1969 d’Eddy Merckx and Les plantes médicinales.

from  to
La Fête, La Musique, la Noce [Party, Music, Revelry]: War, in the colourful slang of Napoleon’s Grande Armée. This is the proclamation of Maria Loboda’s solo exhibition at the IAC, her largest to date in France. Beneath this quasi-baroque banner, with its whirling tunes evocative of joy and merriment, broods a threat. An underlying tension is felt, settling upon the viewer until the end of the visit.

Ann Veronica Janssens

from  to
For the spring of 2017, the Institut d’art contemporain will present a large-scale solo exhibition of Ann Veronica Janssens’ work. The entire space will be dedicated to new pieces referring to existing works.

Gianni Colombo, Paul Sharits
Since its creation in 2009, the Laboratoire espace cerveau, initiated by Ann Veronica Janssens and Nathalie Ergino, Director of the Institut d’art contemporain, taking the field of art experimentation as its starting point, has questioned practical and theoretical research that allows the creation of links between space, time, body and brain.

Interdisciplinary in nature, this project brings together thinking and experiences from artists and researchers in the humanities and physical sciences (anthropologists, astrophysicists, art historians, neurophysiologists), covering progress in neurosciences and astrophysics along with current practises in hypnosis and shamanism...

[Tomorrow in the Battle Think on Me]

from  to
Vanessa Billy, Maurice Blaussyld, Katinka Bock, Peter Buggenhout, Julien Crépieux, Dario D’Aronco, Maria Loboda, Mel O’Callaghan, Bruno Persat
The IAC, which, since its creation, has placed research at the heart of its activities, presents itself periodically as the venue for Otium, an interim period in which art projects are shown; a time of reflection and meditation, distanced from everyday life, and a time to take a breather scheduled within the programme itself.

In June 2015, the IAC presented OTIUM #1, consisting of two parts: De Mineralis, pierres de visions & Kata Tjuta.
In December 2015, the IAC is presenting the collective project Tomorrow in the Battle Think on Me, bringing together French and international artists.

Created in 2002 by the Museum of Contemporary Art of Lyon, with support from the Région Rhône-Alpes, Rendez-vous, an international platform dedicated to young creation, that has associated, since 2003, in a first for France, four institutions: the Biennial of Lyon, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Lyon, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Villeurbanne/Rhône-Alpes and the National School of Fine Arts of Lyon, that make up its artistic direction.
Made possible by the complementarity of these institutions, Rendez-vous proposes to reinforce the connections between different domains of competence, in this way opening increased perspectives to the chosen artists.

Since 2009, ten curators from ten international biennials have been invited to contribute to Rendez-vous. Each edition is the opportunity to invite new biennials.

It is in a wholly other directed approach that the Institut d’art contemporain opens its doors to two projects: De Mineralis, pierres de visions & Kata Tjuta.

The research subjects introduced here, fundamentally linked to the preoccupations and concerns of the IAC, will be further developed in the context of the Station 10 of the Laboratory space brain in December of 2015.

They build upon the recent attempts to be freed from the terms and conditions of the aesthetic experience in its usual acceptance, so as to privilege the attention, perception and sensations of the visitor (following exhibition The Collection Under Review, Artwork Experiences, 2014).

The Institute, having placed research at the heart of its activities since its creation, presents itself as a place of Otium: an intermediary lapse of time, a time for thought, for mediation, propitious to intuition and awareness.
The gardens, like the interior spaces, will be opened, welcoming these projects developed in an elsewhere, becoming, for a Summer,  a here.

1966-79

By Laurent Montaron

from  to
Dove Allouche, Katinka Bock, Ulla von Brandenburg, Jason Dodge, Alexander Gutke, Daniel Gustav Cramer, Guillaume Leblon, Jan Mancuska, Margaret Salmon, Bojan Šarčević, Lonnie van Brummelen & Siebren de Haan, João Maria Gusmão & Pedro Paiva, Jordan Wolfson, Laurent Montaron
The IAC invites as a curator Laurent Montaron to present an overview of the artists of his generation. For the past few years, the IAC has worked closely with Laurent Montaron, through the presentation of a solo exhibition in 2009 and the acquisition of works for its collection. This latest exhibition, which he has entitled 1966-79, is therefore a new extension of this relationship.

Saâdane Afif

Blue time, blue time, blue time...

from  to
At the IAC, Saâdane Afif presents Blue Time, Blue Time, Blue Time.... Playing on the repetition at the onset of the exhibition’s title, the artist invites visitors to follow, from one space to another “variations on the same piece,” started in 2004. Blue Time, rhythmically runs through the show both as work and as a text, like a chorus or leitmotif.

COLLECTION’12

from  to
Bernard Bazile, Candice Breitz, Jordi Colomer, François Curlet, Denicolai & Provoost, Tracey Emin, Douglas Gordon, Pierre Huyghe, Anthony McCall, Laurent Montaron, Matt Mullican, Melik Ohanian, Pipilotti Rist, Anri Sala, Georgina Starr, Gillian Wearing, Carey Young
Collection’12 follows the biennial principle of in situ presentation of the Institut d’Art Contemporain’s collection, which was constituted over more than thirty years. By combining recent acquisitions and older works, the exhibition aims to put the collection into perspective and encourage regular visibility of its evolution. It is presented throughout the year ex situ all around the Rhône-Alpes region, as well as on a national and international level.

Bojan Šarčević

L'ellipse d'ellipse

from  to
The exhibition of Bojan Šarčević, L’ellipse d’ellipse assembles more than thirty works from every medium the artist has worked in—sculpture, film, photography, collage and architectural intervention—offering an overview of his entire practice.

The common feature of the works assembled in the exhibition Dimensions variables is their expression of a way of setting a position in the world using measuring instruments and a mathematical and topographic relation to the universe.
As surveyors of sensitivity, the artists shown seek to render visible the impalpable and the imperceptible and what we cannot construct as a representation.

Collection'10

from  to
Sam Durant, Yona Friedman, John Knight, Vincent Lamouroux, Laurent Montaron, Olivier Nottellet, Michael Sailstorfer, Bojan Šarčević, Joe Scanlan, Evariste Richer
Creative work is at the heart of the missions of the Institut d’art contemporain and forms the fundamental stage on which all its activities are organised and developed, including the constitution of the institute's collection. With Collection’10, the IAC continues the principle of the regular presentation of its collection in situ. This temporality allows the resetting of its perspective and regular visibility of changes.

Brion Gysin

The presence of invitee Jean-Charles Massera (1965, Mantes-la-Jolie, France) is the opportunity for IAC to display the installations of a contemporary «multidisciplinary artist» whose work includes fiction, sociopolitical theatre pieces, radio plays, essays on art and the cinema, and public space poster projects.

Matt Mullican

from  to
The IAC is presenting the largest solo exhibition by Matt Mullican in France since the one at Le Magasin Center for Contemporary Art in Grenoble, in 1990. Born in California in 1951, Matt Mullican occupies a highly distinctive niche in the Contemporary Art field, in terms of both the nature and range of his artistic project.

Michel François

Plans d'évasion

from  to
Michel François, born in 1956 in Saint-Trond (Belgium) has participated in the Venice Biennial (1999), in Documenta 9 in Kassel (1992) and has shown his work at many solo and group shows around the world. (Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst), Ghent.

Collection

from  to
Cocktail Designers & Sébastien Roux, Delphine Coindet, Jordi Colomer, Philippe Decrauzat, Latifa Echakhch, Pierre Malphettes, Delphine Reist
Creativity is what the Institute of Contemporary Art (IAC) is all about. As such it is the springboard for the organisation and development of the Institute's activities as a whole and, in this particular instance, the building of the collection. With Collection, the IAC is continuing its practice of biennial showings of its holcings. This time frame enables update of points of view and regular exhibition of additions to the colection.

La vie à l'épreuve

from  to
Véronique Boudier, Alain Della Negra & Kaori Kinoshita, Jeremy Deller, Raoul Hausmann, Florence Lazar, Kris Martin, Noëlle Pujol, Jean-Xavier Renaud, David Renggli, Taroop & Glabel, Franziska & Lois Weinberger
The title of the exhibition—borrowed from Jimmie Durham—is a word that makes an image. It is impossible to pronounce unless described literally as ‘life’ crossed out diagonally and is a condensation of several lines of the exhibition, ranging from a route through territory indicated by a road sign to the irreducibility of image to word.

Rendez-vous 09

JEUNE CRÉATION INTERNATIONALE

from  to
Martì Anson, Botto e Bruno, Valery Chtak, Gintaras Didziapetris, Dilomprizulike, Dran, Verònica Gòmez, Kevin Hunt, Takehiro Ikawa, Armand Jalut, Magali Lefebvre, Elodie Lesourd, Nadia Lichtig, Charles Lopez, Laurina Paperina, Ludovic Paquelier, Bettina Samson, Kuang-Yu Tsui, Ôzlem Uzun, Ji Zhou
Created in 2002 and based in the Rhône-Alpes Region, Rendez-vous is an international platform dedicated to young creative artists. The brainchild of a collective curatorship–the Musée d’art contemporain (Lyon), the Ecole nationale des beaux-arts (Lyon), and the Institut d’art contemporain (Villeurbanne/Rhône-Alpes)–is being further built up through collaboration from international partners.

Laboratoire Espace Cerveau Station 1 / Lancement

from  to
Carlos Cruz-Diez, Lucio Fontana, Julio Le Parc, Anthony McCall, François Morellet, Nam June Paik, Paul Sharits, Nicolas Schöffer, James Turrell
Initiated by the artist Ann Veronica Janssens and Nathalie Ergino, director of the Institut d’Art Contemporain, this project proposes to work in the field of artistic experimentation and explore the practical and theoretical research enabling us to link the space and the brain. This interdisciplinary laboratory brings together the reflections and experiments of artists and scientists (neuroscience, physics, astrophysics...), and also of philosophers, anthropologists, art historians and theoreticians.

9 evenings : art, theater & engineering

from  to
John Cage, Lucinda Childs, Öyvind Fahlström, Alex Hay, Deborah Hay, Steve Paxton, Yvonne Rainer, Robert Rauschenberg, David Tudor, Robert Whitman
Institut d’art contemporain, in partnership with Centre Pompidou, is presenting an entirely new project—an exhibition of films relating 9 Evenings: Theatre and Engineering, a series of performances held from 13 to 23 October 1966 at the 69th Regiment Armory in New York. Combining theatre, dance and music, 9 Evenings marks a new stage in collaborative experiments by artists and engineers, forming a key moment in the history of closer interaction between art and technology.

Laurent Montaron

from  to
The Institut d’Art Contemporain starts the New Year with a major monographic exhibition by Laurent Montaron. On show on this occasion there will be existing works and some new productions, such as the film BALBVTIO, co-produced with Frac Champagne-Ardenne, who are putting on almost simultaneously an exhibition by the same artist (AYYLU, 19 February - 19 April 2009).

Fabricateurs d’espaces

from  to
Björn Dahlem, Jeppe Hein, Vincent Lamouroux, Guillaume Leblon, Rita McBride, Evariste Richer, Michael Sailstorfer, Hans Schabus
Fabricateurs d’espaces (spacemakers) assembles eight artists of the same generation, who have worked on broadening practices in sculpture and who show recent or special works for the occasion. In contrast with the sculpture of recent decades that was drawn essentially from ‘post-ready-made’ practices, relational approaches (interactive installations) or assemblies of recycled material, their work uses space as the raw material for plastic volumes and as the very foundation of the work.

Ambition d'art

from  to
Alighiero Boetti, Daniel Buren, Jordi Colomer, Tony Cragg, Luciano Fabro, Yona Friedman, Anish Kapoor, On Kawara, Martha Rosler, Jeff Wall, Lawrence Weiner
The Institut d’art contemporain in Villeurbanne, France celebrates its thirtieth anniversary in 2008 and, to mark this occasion, invites its founder, Jean Louis Maubant, to curate an exhibition that will be accompanied by a major publication.
Ambition d’art is a milestone for the Institute and the focus for numerous events: a colloquium, two days of international meetings and a region-wide tour showing works from the Rhône-Alpes Collection in resonance with Ambition d’art.

Collection(s) 08

from  to
François Curlet, Jimmie Durham, Jef Geys, Dan Graham, Rodney Graham, Laurent Grasso, Ann Veronica Janssens, Anthony McCall, Melik Ohanian, Allen Ruppersberg
Creative work is at the heart of the mission of the Institut d’art contemporain, forming the fundamental stage from which all activities become organised and develop. This includes the constitution of the Rhône-Alpes Collection. Assembling a collection of contemporary works of art involves being both upstream and downstream of the creative operation, practically at the same time as the emergence of the works. The exhibiting and production of works are confirmed as forming one of the key sources of collecting. The Rhône-Alpes Collection is thus inevitably intercepted by the Institute's programme and its history. A collection crystallises the essential questions running through the art world and that continuously redefine its engagements.

Joe Scanlan

Solongsolsolong

from  to
After a project completed in 2003 (Do It Yourself Dead On Arrival Pay For Your Pleasure (reprise), the Institut d’art contemporain has invited Joe Scanlan again for a solo show of recent works.
The exhibition designed by the artist for the Institut d’art contemporain is a specific project paying a tribute to Sol LeWitt after the death of this great exponent of minimal art. Joe Scanlan uses his own vocabulary to address the relation between his work and Sol LeWitt and minimalism.

Laurent Grasso

Magnetic Palace

from  to
At the Institut d’art contemporain, Laurent Grasso uses the entire exhibition space as a support for experiments using electromagnetic phenomena such as the aurora borealis and electric arcs.

Jef Geys

from  to
The Institut d'Art Contemporain is presenting the first Jef Geys retrospective in France. What Jef Geys has planned for the Institut d'Art Contemporain is an exhibition that includes most of the components of his work: archives and autobiography, architecture and matricial forms, the living, the body, the educational. The exceptional character of this exhibition lies in the fact that it is presenting, for the first time, all the different back issues of Kempens Informatieblad, the publication that runs through his life and work.

Jens Haaning

from  to
The Institut d'Art Contemporain is putting on a solo exhibition by Jens Haaning, featuring recent works and a specific project. Haaning enjoys an international reputation, and has participated in numerous group exhibitions (the 9th Istanbul biennial, 2005; the Sydney biennial; the Whitney Museum of American Art, 2004; Documenta 11, Cassel, 2002).

Christophe Terlinden

from  to
The Institut d'Art Contemporain is inviting Christophe Terlinden to create an artistic project in the glass structure of "La verrière", which occupies the interstitial space between the street and the art centre – and reciprocally.

François Curlet

from  to
The Institut d'Art Contemporain is presenting an important exhibition of work by François Curlet. The exhibition at the Institut d'Art Contemporain, bringing together fifty-four works created between 1989 and 2006, will give an overview of his approach in the form of a rebus in three dimensions. At this important juncture in his career, encouraged by the IAC, Curlet is inviting two radical artists, Jens Haaning and Christophe Terlinden, to occupy different spaces, thus extending his "off-centre" art into the exhibition venue.

Allen Ruppersberg

One Of Many - Origins And Variants

from  to
The Institut d'Art Contemporain is presenting an important retrospective of work by Allen Ruppersberg, an untypical American artist with a growing reputation. One of Many – Origins and Variants is a joint production with the Kunsthalle in Düsseldorf, and the Institut d'Art Contemporain is the last stop in its itinerary. It comprises fifty pieces dating from the period 1968-2005 – previously-existing works, along with others that were specially produced or reworked for the occasion, in line with the evolutional dimension that characterises this artist's approach.

Anthony McCall

Between You And I et autres films de lumière solide

from  to
The Institut d'Art Contemporain is presenting a solo exhibition by Anthony McCall. This English film maker, one of the protagonists of experimental cinema, first became known in the 1970s for his "solid light" films. After abandoning this activity for twenty years, he came back to it in the 2000s, and in particular on the occasion of the 2001 exhibition Into the Light, at the Whitney Museum of American Art. As a representative, or indeed a symbol, of the migration of cinematographic creativity towards the art scene, McCall is now a familiar figure in the contemporary art scene.

Collection'05

from  to
Saâdane Afif, Louis Theillier, Pascal Poulain, Alex MacLean, Map Office, Claude Closky, Ayşe Erkmen, Arno Piroud (Arnaud Piroud, dit), Géraldine Kosiak, Pauline Fondevila, Utopia Station
The Institut d'art contemporain (IAC) is putting on show the recent acquisitions of the Collection Rhône-Alpes. Since 1998, when the Nouveau Musée merged with the Fonds Régional d'Art Contemporain (FRAC) Rhône-Alpes, the IAC, besides putting on temporary exhibitions, has been managing and developing this collection. For the summer of 2006, during this transitional period in its history, the IAC's new management team has decided to present the works that were acquired in 2005. Collection'05 comprises works that focus, to a greater or lesser extent, on urbanism, architecture, mass communication, etc., with approaches that in general could be described as poetic.

Distorsions

from  to
Raymond Hains, François Curlet, Jean Daviot, Rodney Graham, Laurent Grasso, Ann Veronica Janssens, KOLKOZ, Nicolas Moulin
Distortions is opening in Villeurbanne just as Glissades – "Being the Minister of one's own Culture"1 closes in Paris. It is a discreet form of transmission that extends the active tribute paid to Raymond Hains, from the Palissades ("Fences") to the Lapalissades ("Truisms”), as that peerless artist continues to spin out the metaphor of freedom enamoured of words. And if Distortions is not an extrapolation of Subréel (at the Musée d'Art Contemporain in Marseille, 2003), it is nonetheless an avatar of the latter, like a partial zoom onto certain points of view adopted by that exhibition, on the rebound and with other focal points. In this particular instance, it is not so much a case of the disturbing effects of spatial or corporal perceptions on the viewer as of optical, sometimes infrathin phenomena explored by artists, with the apprehension of reality tipping over into another state of reality: the elusive state of the abstract image, the residual image, or the subliminal image.

Melik Ohanian

Let's Turn or Turn Around

from  to
The Institut d’art contemporain did not participate in discussions that were recent—but of another age—about French art and its international position. In fact, Melik Ohanian's exhibition presented here seems to be the only reply possible. He belongs to a generation of artists of relevance already present on the international scene and the exhibition also proved that creation is still possible, even if the art system, clearly reflecting the society that carries it, now tends to favour shows and play on media exposure at the expense of strictness and accuracy.
