Totem

Totem is the result of a reappropriation. Inspired by West African sculptures now largely preserved in French collections—often as a result of colonial plundering—it is part of a practice of displacement that is central to Josèfa Ntjam's work. This is not a formal homage, but a political reappropriation: reclaiming the image means reclaiming possession of the object, its history, and its genealogies. The multiple thus presents itself as a form of counter-archive and opens up the possibility of a transfer outside Western museum frameworks.
