From Toy Story to La Nuit au Musée, stories of personification surround us. Telling these stories turns our projections into living creations. In the manner of a pareidolia, our affective relationships with the figures represented in the works reflect our intimate experiences.
Casting, amitiés côté jardin tells the story of a group of characters who meet in the hollow of a round, in the intimacy of an inner garden. This round, inhabited by different but interconnected figures, takes the form of an exhibition. It imagines the intimate, emotional links that can exist between works, and looks at the relationships of affect that artists can have with them. Multiple beings coexist within it, shifting the question of representation to that of embodiment, and figuration to personification. Their side-by-side presence and intersecting gazes allow us to invent a narrative between these characters in the same piece.
A group exhibition is always an opportunity for encounters on several levels. This one is the fruit of multiple collaborations. The first is made possible by the Réalité d'une exposition program, a partnership between the contemporary art venue In extenso and the École supérieure d'art de Clermont Métropole. The program brought together five students, who, supported by the In extenso team, have now been working together for half a year on the conception and curation of this exhibition. Together, they visited studios and contemporary art collections in the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region. They met works and artists in the region. Then, it was the artists themselves who met through a “round of interviews” via a digital platform, without ever seeing each other. By writing to each other, the artists discussed their practices, their relationship to their work and their affects.
In an edition accompanying the exhibition, you'll find the chain of their exchanges, elements about the exhibition, and a co-written curatorial fiction featuring the site and the pieces.
